Getting Started

Are you thinking that it would be fun to write poetry? Or maybe you’ve tried before, and think that you can’t? Anyway, I have found that one tool that is very important for me to write poetry, is a rhyming dictionary. It will help you find words that rhyme with almost anything that you could write. Another good thing to have is a thesaurus and also a Webster’s dictionary. A lot of words in the rhyming dictionary are words that no one would usually use, so it’s good to know what they mean. Other than that, I would try to find a subject that is of interest to you. Like snow, or rain, the changing seasons, or if you’re tired of hearing about these topics, maybe something closer to home, like loneliness, discouragement, or something that’s going on in your life right now.

Never Give Up

At times it’s easy to believe that we aren’t all that good at writing. And that no one really wants to read what we want to write. But guess what? Practice makes perfect, and if you keep on working, you can write something that people want to read. And believe me, I’ve written a lot of stuff that will never be read. Mainly because I’m too embarrassed to show it, so don’t give up! You’re going to write some pretty bad stuff, but if you don’t give up, you can write things that will touch people’s hearts and lives.

Find Your Niche

There are lots of different styles of poetry. There are inspirational, narrative, and patriotic. Just to mention a few. There are writers who write most of these styles. But most of them have one particular style that they are really good at. And even though they veer from that every once in a while to write in a different style, for the most part they stick with what they like to read, and write. So you might want to find what style you want to write in, and have material in. For instance, if you have gone through hard times, and come through them victorious, then you would probably be able to write inspirational poems. If you’re a history buff, and love to read stories of brave deeds, then you could probably write historical narrative poems. And so on. Anyway, I hope that this has been of help to you!
